This was a favour for a mate’s event night at The Glasshouse so I thought I’d stick it up on here as I haven’t posted much at all recently.

Summer Project(s)

Term has started again, just had my first day back and handed in my summer project. We had 1main project and another not so main project. The briefs were simple. Watch 3 films and produce an ‘Emotional Response’ to one of them. The films were Carol Reed’s ‘The Third Man’, Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Spellbound’ and Jaques Tati’s ‘ Mon Oncle’ – which is the one I did my emotional response piece on. I played around with a few ideas. Originally I was going to make a video that causes the viewers to feel the emotions I felt during the film, but I decided on a photo montage with a goat (which represents me) and the emotions spewing from it’s head.

Here’s that piece:

Emotional Response

Then I had to find a quote that sums up my philosophy on life which for it I used “If you don’t open your mouth, you don’t get fed” as it can apply to anything, such as business, life in general, or actually eating. If you don’t make yourself known or speak out and get noticed, who’s going to pay you to do a job over someone else? Then make it into a typographic piece, so here is the piece I produced for that quote: (click image to make it bigger)

Typographic Quote

So that’s that.

A.W.E.S.O.M.-O

Last minute costume for a fancy dress party. Originally I was going to go as an arcade machine, but due to insufficient material (was going to make it out of wood) I couldn’t. So I hunted around the garage and found the most perfect pair of boxes for an A.W.E.S.O.M.-O costume!

Incase you don’t know who A.W.E.S.O.M.-O is, it’s Eric Cartmans’ alter ego on the cartoon series South Park.

A.W.E.S.O.M.-O

After many man hours labouring over the thing and getting the head to move with my head, I added the trinkets and tada! It was finished!

Here is me, sporting the AWESOME A.W.E.S.O.M.-O costume!

Awesom-o

Student Budget Spreadsheet

As many of you might know, the default templates in Excel and Numbers aren’t all that equipped for uni students.

After a fair dose of modification on an existing Numbers template, I’ve optimised this for students, able to put in their incomings, outgoings, student loan, rent, all that jazz and some extra fields for that little bit extra you spend but doesn’t really have a place.

I’ll place it here for you to download and give it a whirl. I haven’t gone over it with a fine comb yet so there may possible be some glitches, but the basic structure works and any feedback is highly appreciated.

Click here to download the Student Budget spreadsheet – This only works in Numbers for Mac (sorry Microsoft users)

Hope this helps.

MouseDuck

I wonder if there’s an animal as quiet as a mouse but has the swimming capabilities of a duck?

Fatpants Vector

The vector bug has bitten, I’m getting really into doing these things. So I found a photograph on Google and as soon as I saw it, I fell in love. It was perfect.

This one I did so much quicker than the previous, but that’s what comes with practice I suppose. Also this image wasn’t as high resolution as my previous so it was a lot more vague and the detailing was minor.

Here they are side by side, photo by vector, potato potáto.

Then I added a background and it’s done. You can see the final version on my portfolio, but to be honest. It’s just got a different background.

Vectorisation.

I’ve seen these amazing pop art style images of girls around the internet and on club flyers. I really like them, the simplicity of it, the minimal use of colours.

I decided to give it a go, so I found a photograph of my girlfriend from her old art coursework on my computer and started to vectorise. It was challenging at first, deciding where to put the shadows and in what order to build up the picture on, but I got there eventually and lo and behold, I think for a first attempt, it turned out really well.

Here’s the photo:

and the final piece.

Vectorised

Viola! I’m going to make some more of these vectors. There’s something quite mesmerizing about the whole process.

The Moneymaker – Just Add Clients.

I think my friend and I are onto a winner here.

We’ve decided to set up our own company utilising the skills we already have and the ones we are learning.
I won’t give too much of the game away yet as we are still discussing the business plan but I will leave you with a glimpse into the company branding.

New Glasses?

No no no, well yes, actually I made them today.

As you may know, I’ve given my blog a bit of a facelift.

I wanted something to go with this theme, minus all the technical changes I’ve done I wanted something that would be instantly associated with me.  Well, I took a long hard look at myself, and my most distinguishable features would probably have to be my eyebrows and glasses. Easy.

So after playing around with some photos, tracing my glasses and eyebrows in Illustrator I ended up with a nice simple little design, more of a logo actually. Yes. It will be my personal logo (looks like I might have to get some new business cards printed).

As you can tell I triplicated it with the motion of an eyebrow raise moving from one eye to another, obviously for a logo I would have just one set of glasses and eyebrows for the simplicity of it.

So anyway, they are on the site if you scroll down a little bit to the right in the sidebar.

6 Point Manifesto For Mechanics.

Yet another partner brief. My partner for this project being Chris Lovell (blog link coming soon).

The basic gist of the brief was to write a six point manifesto for a low paid workers of a certain area, ie. School dinner lady, minicab driver, all the way to a municipal gardener.

We got mechanics.

After talking to mechanics about the jobs we put together around 5-6 six point manifestos for different areas of being a mechanic such as manifesto to success, apprentice survival guide and some others. We followed through on a more general approach but with a slight twist.

We made a video. We had our points. We used sausages as human intestines.

The idea was in the thought that mechanics are a lot like surgeons, some points mentioned in the video obviously do not apply to surgeons, yet the film, after editing, in my opinion, worked out really well.

Being critiqued tomorrow. Hopefully go well. The critique went really well, they loved the concept and the little touches in the video, and a plus for us, there wasn’t a negative comment about any of it. Overall, a very successful project.

Here’s the Manifesto For Mechanics.
